EUGENE, Ore. -- Investigators say the south Eugene man who shot at two burglars -- killing one -- might have known the intruders. "There's reason to believe this is a target incident," said Eugene Police Detective Matt Herbert. WILKESBORO -- A Wilkes County man who called 911 to report hearing voices outside his building on Nov. 5 and then shot two intruders, killing one of them, will not be charged, authorities said. Steve Joseph Whitley, 58, of North Wilkesboro, acted in self-defense, said District Attorney Tom Horner. He and Sheriff Chris Shew discussed the case most recently on Thursday. Law enforcement responded to reports of "shots fired" at a residence just north of Box Elder shortly after 4:00 PM Wednesday afternoon. Box Elder Police officials say the incident was the result of an apparent home invasion.
